Iran promises response: "We will not bow to pressure"
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has commented on the decision of Britain, France and Germany to reimpose UN sanctions after failed talks on the country's nuclear program, AFP reports.
"Iran will give an appropriate response to this illegal and unjust action by the three European countries to protect our national rights and interests," is the minister's message.
The decision is "illegal and regrettable", and Iran is now considering its options - including withdrawing from the non-proliferation treaty, a senior Iranian official told Reuters.
The move is countering diplomacy rather than contributing to it, the source said, adding:
- Iran will continue with diplomacy [...] But we will not bow to pressure.
European countries reimpose UN sanctions on Iran
Britain, France and Germany have begun a 30-day process to reimpose UN sanctions on Iran, according to a letter seen by Reuters.
Several talks on Iran's nuclear program have been held since Israel and the United States bombed nuclear facilities in June, but the latest talks in Geneva on Tuesday did not result in sufficient concessions from Iran, according to the European countries.
The letter expresses hope for a diplomatic solution before the end of September.
Iran has previously threatened a "harsh response" if sanctions are reimposed. The announcement is likely to trigger the worst crisis between Iran and the West since the attacks in June, writes The Guardian.
Iran's nuclear program - the point
The US and Iran held five rounds of talks on Iran's nuclear energy program between April and June 2025, without reaching a concrete agreement.
The main issue in the negotiations was Iran's uranium enrichment, where the US demanded a halt and Iran refused to accept any restrictions.
According to the IAEA report in May, Iran had increased its production of highly enriched uranium to over 400 kilograms, the equivalent of material for ten nuclear bombs.
After US and Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities in June, talks between the US and Iran were suspended.
In July 2025, talks resumed, now between Iran and Germany, France and the UK, with the EU threatening to reimpose sanctions if no agreement was reached.
