Ukraine top of agenda when Putin meets Xi:

This weekend, Russia's Vladimir Putin travels to China for a visit that is expected to last almost a week, writes The Guardian. The Russian president will, together with the leaders of North Korea, Cuba and Iran, attend a military parade.

But perhaps the most important matter is to discuss the war in Ukraine with China's Xi Jinping, believes Alexander Gabuev, director of the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Centre.

- The two leaders need to compare notes and make sure they have the same view. This is important because the war has become a supporting pillar of their relationship, he says.

He also believes that Putin wants to know, among other things, how China would react if the US asks it to put pressure on Russia to end the war.

During the war, the relationship between the countries has developed and China is today the largest customer of Russian oil and coal and soon also of natural gas.

Murdered presidential candidate's father takes over the baton

Miguel Uribe Londoño, father of murdered Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay, now wants to become president himself, reports El Tiempo. Earlier this week, he launched his campaign to become the presidential candidate for his son's right-wing party Centro Democrático.

Uribe Londoño has previously been a local politician, but after his son's death he has also come forward nationally and harshly criticized current president Gustavo Petro.

- I made this decision because I believe that I can be a force that can help unite and save Colombia from the abyss they want to lead us to, he says according to El Tiempo.

Miguel Uribe Turbay was shot several times during a meeting in June and died after several weeks in hospital.

Major protests in Indonesia - three people burned to death

Three people have been killed in connection with major protests in Indonesia, reports AFP. The protesters stormed and set fire to a government building in the city of Makassar, where the three people were burned to death.

Four more people are being treated in hospital after the fire.

The violent protests broke out in a number of cities after images of a police car running over a motorcycle taxi and killing its driver were circulated.

Seven police officers have been arrested after the incident and President Prabowo Subianto has promised a thorough investigation into the incident.
