Political situation in Canada

Canada's opposition leader re-elected to parliament

Canada's Conservative opposition leader Pierre Poilievre is back in parliament, Canadian media reports. In connection with the national election in April, he lost the parliamentary seat he had held for 20 years.

Last night, Poilievre won an easy victory in a by-election in Alberta. This was possible because party colleague Damien Kurek stepped aside and offered his party leader the seat in the Conservative riding of Battle River-Crowfoot.

- Getting to know the people of this region has been the greatest privilege of my life, says Poilievre in his victory speech.

Back in parliament, he is expected to act as a thorn in the side of Liberal Prime Minister Mark Carney, writes the Financial Times.

Trump wants to purge “woke” from US museums

Donald Trump believes that state museums are the last bastion of “woke” culture in the US and has therefore asked his officials to “review” their operations in a similar way to what he has done with the country’s universities.

In a post on Truth Social, he specifically points out the Smithsonian museum organization, which he believes has “gone off track.”

“Where everything is about how terrible our country is, how bad slavery was and how unsuccessful the victims have been – nothing about successes, nothing about light, nothing about the future.”

He goes on to write that the US should not be woke, because “woke is broke.”

“We have the “hottest” country in the world, and we want people to talk about it – even in our museums.”

Over 1,000 Spanish deaths due to extreme heat

The extreme heat wave in Spain has caused 1,100 deaths in the past two weeks. This is according to an estimate from the Spanish state research institute Carlos III, reports AFP.

The report compares historical death statistics with weather data. In July, 1,060 deaths were estimated to be due to extreme heat, an increase of 57 percent compared to last year.

In addition to the deaths caused directly by the heat, the air and water are polluted by the fires raging in several parts of the country. The sparsely populated region of El Bierzo is currently among the most polluted places in the world, according to the public service channel Rtve.

Four firefighters have died during the fires in Spain

A firefighter has died after a fire engine overturned in northwestern Spain. This brings the number of firefighters who have died in the country's forest fires to four, according to regional authorities.

The firefighter was involved in extinguishing fires in the Castile and León region when the accident occurred.

Spain's weather agency said temperatures had exceeded 44 degrees Celsius in several parts of the country over the weekend. It also warned that the risk of fires was now high across Spain.
