Storming of the Capitol
Trump prosecutor Jack Smith under investigation for political crimes
Jack Smith, the special prosecutor who led two federal investigations into Donald Trump, is being investigated for violating a law that prohibits federal employees from engaging in political activity, the New York Post reports.
The investigation is being led by the U.S. Office of Special Counsel (OSC). It was launched after Republican Senator Tom Cotton on Wednesday asked the OSC to investigate Smith for “unprecedented election interference in the 2024 presidential election,” claiming that Smith tried to hurt Trump politically.
Jack Smith led the investigations into the storming of the Capitol and Trump’s handling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago. This made him a frequent target of Trump’s attacks.
Smith dropped the charges against Trump and resigned in January after Trump won the presidential election.
Political situation in Colombia
Colombia's ex-president sentenced to 12 years of house arrest
Colombia's ex-president Álvaro Uribe was sentenced to 12 years of house arrest on Friday for bribery and witness tampering, reports the AP.
The 73-year-old announced that he will appeal the historic verdict, which he calls "political persecution."
The nearly six-month trial has divided the country. The left has praised it, while Uribe's conservative allies and supporters accuse the justice system of politicization.
Uribe ruled between 2002 and 2010, with strong support from the United States. After the verdict, he has received support from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“Uribe’s only crime is that he fought and defended his homeland tirelessly,” he writes on X.

Task: Israel Considers “Conquering” Gaza City
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has postponed a decision on what military action to take if Hamas does not agree to a ceasefire, a source with knowledge of the matter told CNN.
This is because there are differences of opinion within the Israeli government. One idea being floated is to surround Gaza City and other major settlements in the Gaza Strip, and another is to “conquer” the city, according to the source.
Different ministers are said to be advocating different plans. A decision is expected to be made next week at the earliest.
On Saturday, Hamas announced that it will not lay down its arms until an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital has been established.
