Tenth prison murder this year: Cannot be tolerated

Last weekend's brutal murder at the El Abra prison in Cochabamba is the tenth prison murder in Bolivia this year, Los Tiempos reports.

The country's human rights ombudsman, Pedro Callisaya, said back in March that those who commit these murders should not go unpunished.

- We cannot allow impunity to continue, nor for the authorities responsible for prison management to continue to show passivity, he said at the time.

The figures for last year have already been reached, when nine people were killed in prisons, writes Los Tiempos.

A suspect in a "bloody" murder at a prison in Bolivia

A person is suspected of the murder at a prison in the Bolivian city of Cochabamba, reports Los Tiempos.

The victim was a representative of the prisoners at the El Abra prison in the city. He was attacked, beaten and stabbed to death.

– A bloody incident occurred inside the El Abra prison. An investigation team was immediately deployed, says the police chief.

It is the tenth prison murder in Bolivia so far this year.
