Syria receives weapons from Turkey in new defense agreement
Turkey is sending weapons and other military support to Syria, international news agencies report. The countries have signed a new agreement on defense cooperation that also means that Syrian soldiers can train in Turkey if necessary.
Talks about new cooperation have been going on for several months, according to Reuters. The agreement was signed on Wednesday after a meeting between the countries' foreign ministers, defense ministers and intelligence chiefs.
Since the overthrow of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad in December, Turkey has been one of the new regime's most important allies.
Over 400,000 have returned to Syria from Turkey
Over 400,000 Syrians who fled to Turkey during dictator Bashar al-Assad's time in power have been able to return since he was overthrown in December, the Turkish government said on Thursday.
Since mid-June alone, Turkey's migration agency has registered 140,000 returnees.
Around 2.5 million Syrians who fled to Turkey remain in the country, according to the latest figures.
