Donald Trump to run golf club in Vietnam
Donald Trump's family company will run a large golf club outside the Vietnamese capital Hanoi, Reuters reports.
A Vietnamese company is building the facility, and Trump is not involved in the investment or in the compensation to the farmers who are forced to move because of the construction. It is the real estate company that has paid Trump's company $5 million for the trademark licensing rights.
Five farmers who have to move from their farmland say that the authorities will pay compensation of between $12 and $30 per square meter of farmland.
Thousands of villagers will be affected. According to a document from local authorities seen by Reuters, final payment decisions are expected next month.
Vietnam farmers give up land – for Trump's golf course
Vietnamese farmer Nguyen Thi Huong, who Reuters spoke to, has been ordered to leave her farm outside Hanoi to make way for a golf course to be run by the Trump family. She is being offered just $3,200 and rice in compensation.
Thousands of villagers have been offered similar compensation packages in exchange for giving up land that has been theirs for years or decades, according to documents and six sources Reuters spoke to.
Construction of the facility is scheduled to begin next month and is the first collaboration for Trump's family businesses in Vietnam. The agreement was accelerated in connection with the countries' negotiations on a trade agreement in early July.
