Analysis: Trump uses the capital to flex his military muscles

Donald Trump is painting a dystopian picture of Washington DC in order to justify his decision to take control of the capital's police department, writes Stephen Collinson in an analysis on CNN. Washington DC certainly has challenges when it comes to crime, but the president's apocalyptic picture of the situation does not match reality, he says.

"The president has made it a habit to use the capital as a stage for his military demonstration of power," he writes.

The Guardian's George Chidi also writes that Trump ignores statistics showing that the number of violent crimes in the capital is the lowest in 30 years. He says that the president is ignoring actual successes when it comes to law enforcement because he sees political value in appearing strong.

Zolan Kanno-Youngs of the New York Times writes that Donald Trump sees the capital as a property that needs renovation. The president continues to fuel fears of violent crime and unrest, especially in large cities controlled by Democrats, while he is criticized for doing too little to combat poverty and crime, writes Kanno-Youngs.

The National Guard has begun arriving in Washington, DC after Donald Trump took measures to curb crime in the city, according to American media. The president has announced that hundreds of soldiers are being called in and that the capital police are being placed under federal control.

The decision has been heavily criticized and many have pointed to government statistics that show that the number of violent crimes in the city is the lowest in 30 years.

On Tuesday, Trump's advisor Stephen Miller claimed that statistics from cities controlled by Democrats are "fake", without presenting any evidence.

"Everyone who lives in these areas knows it. They adapt their entire lives to it. Democrats are trying to overthrow civilization. President Trump will save it," he writes on X.
