Trump's dismissal sparks anger: "Very dangerous"

The US Department of Labor presented very weak job figures. A few hours later, Donald Trump fired the head of statistics, Erika McEntarfer, and promised to replace her with "someone much more competent". The decision has led to strong criticism from several quarters.

The newspaper has spoken to several employees at the Department of Labor who do not have a bad word to say about McEntarfer. None of them recognize Trump's claims that she is politicized.

- She is very clear that this is an apolitical agency. That we should produce numbers, not politics, says one employee.

Conservative debater David Brooks says these are claims that Trump finds difficult to accept.

– I don't think it can occur to him that there are objective officials who don't have a political agenda, he tells PBS Newshour.

27 people have had their death sentences carried out during the year, and another nine are planned.

This represents a break in the trend in the country, where the number of death sentences has been decreasing for a long time.

The trend is being driven by the state of Florida, where Governor Ron de Santis has authorized nine executions in 2025. That is the highest number since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976.

“There are some crimes that are so heinous that the only reasonable punishment is death,” de Santis said during a press conference in May.

According to John Blume of the Cornell Death Penalty Project, the increase in executions may be driven by governors feeling pressured by Donald Trump.

“The most cynical view would be that it seems important to the president, so it is important to them,” he says.
