Colombia recalls its ambassador to the United States
Colombia is recalling its ambassador to the United States, the Colombian Foreign Ministry said, AFP and Reuters reported.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries have deteriorated recently. The background is the US attacks on boats in the Caribbean Sea that the US claims are smuggling drugs to the United States.
On Sunday, Colombian President Gustavo Petro accused the US of violating their territory. Donald Trump responded by calling Petro an “illegal drug kingpin” and at the same time stopped all aid to Colombia.
Trump: Colombian President is a Drug King
Donald Trump launches a verbal attack on Colombian President Gustavo Petro, calling him an “illegal drug kingpin,” Reuters reports. The US president also announces that the US is stopping aid to Colombia.
Earlier in the day, Petro accused the US of violating the country's sovereignty in connection with an attack on an alleged drug boat in the Caribbean Sea.
"The US has violated Colombian territory and murdered an honest Colombian worker," he wrote on X.
Donald Trump believes the US is in armed conflict with cartels and writes in a post on Truth Social that drugs smuggled into the US cause "death, destruction and chaos."
