The wildfires in California

Anger and sadness after new fires: "Outrageous"

In the American district of Butte in California, anger and sadness are growing after a new forest fire, the Park Fire, hit the area. Also in 2018, 2020 and 2021, several cities in the area were hit hard by forest fires.

"It's upsetting that we're here again, and it's especially upsetting that this fire was caused by an individual," said Police Chief Kory Honea, referring to the fire believed to have started when a man pushed a burning car down a ravine.

The newspaper has spoken with several residents of the city of Chico. Local politician Addison Winslow calls the fires a "disaster" but is not surprised that the district is hit once again.

Kristy and Michael Daneau, who moved to a new house after the 2018 wildfires destroyed their home, have been forced to evacuate because of the Park Fire.

- You never expect it to happen again, says Kristy Daneau.
Lightning and drought risk giving new life to the giant fire

The Park Fire in California is now the fourth largest in the state's history, several media reports. It is the largest forest fire in 2024 and covers over 160,000 hectares, according to the rescue service.

6,500 firefighters are working to fight the fire.

In an update on Saturday, firefighter Mark Brunton said that the extinguishing work is going in the right direction and that the milder weather of recent days has made it easier, writes the AP news agency.

At the same time, the weather forecasts show that the coming days may be warm and characterized by thunder. Lightning, strong winds and drought risk giving new life to the flames.

- What we are most worried about out there is a change in the weather, says emergency manager Jim Evans according to the LA Times.
