Harris's tax for the rich is seen in Silicon Valley

Vice President Kamala Harris's proposal to tax unrealized gains at 25 percent for the wealthiest is sparking fury among the top brass in Silicon Valley, the FT reports.

Among the critics is Marc Andreessen, who founded the venture capital company Andreessen Horowitz. If the tax is introduced, startups as a concept will be "completely unthinkable", he believes.

- The risk capital will simply run out. Companies like ours wouldn't exist, he said in a podcast earlier in July, according to the paper.

The proposal has also been met with skepticism among Harris' wealthier donors. In internal meetings, donors have urged the vice president to scrap the proposal, the NY Times reports.

The elections in Venezuela
Over 700 protesters have been jailed in Venezuela

In Venezuela, over 700 people arrested in connection with demonstrations against Nicolás Maduro's alleged election victory have been taken to two high-security prisons. AFP writes and refers to a statement from a human rights organization.

According to the news agency, several of the transfers must have taken place under questionable circumstances. For example, relatives of those arrested have not been told that they have been moved and where.

More than 2,400 people were arrested in connection with the protests after Maduro declared himself the winner of the election at the end of July. An election result that was questioned in several parts of the world, as well as by the Venezuelan opposition, because Maduro did not publish any details from the voting.

Political situation in Germany
All journalists are transported from AFD's election vigil in Thuringia

The far-right AFD is bringing all journalists from the party's election vigil in connection with Sunday's state election in Thuringia, reports Deutsche Welle. Instead, journalists should be able to interview party representatives in the state parliament during the evening.

The announcement comes after the newspapers Spiegel, Bild, Welt and Tageszeitung sued for being excluded from the vigil. This led to the regional court ruling yesterday that AFD must give all reporters equal access to the vigil.

In the opinion polls, AFD has been at 30 percent support, almost ten percentage points higher than the Christian Democratic CDU. AFD's leader in the state is Björn Höcke, one of the party's most extreme politicians. Among other things, he has twice been sentenced for using Nazi rhetoric, writes Politico.

In Saxony too, the AFD appears to be heading for big electoral victories.

Musk counterattacks: "Karma is a bitch"

Elon Musk goes on a frontal attack against Brazil's HD chairman Alexandre de Moraes. This after platform X, which is owned by Musk, was blocked throughout the country this weekend.

In a series of posts on X, Musk calls de Moraes, among other things, "fake, wishful dictator and Voldemort". The judge is also accused of trying to influence the presidential election in Brazil, which, according to Musk, could lead to 20 years in prison.

“He can block this platform in Brazil, but he cannot prevent the whole world from finding out about his illegal, shameful and hypocritical deeds. Karma is a bitch bro," writes Musk on X.

The new obesity drugs
Research: Ozempic appears to slow aging

Semaglutide, sold as Ozempic and Wegovy, is not only effective against diabetes and obesity – it appears to reduce mortality overall, according to a new study according to The Guardian.

The findings were presented at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) convention in London last week. 17,604 overweight, but diabetes-free, people over 45 took part in a study and received either semaglutide or a placebo.

The three-year study showed that those who received semaglutide not only had lower mortality from cardiovascular disease, but also from other conditions such as infections.

Semaglutide has more extensive potential than previously thought, says Harlan Krumholz at the Yale School of Medicine.

- It promotes health. It wouldn't surprise me if improving people's health in this way actually slows down aging.
