Political situation in Mexico

Green light for criticized bill on elected judges

Mexico's lower house on Wednesday voted in favor of outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's proposal to overhaul the country's legal system, including by allowing federal judges to be elected. This is reported by several media.

The bill has been widely criticized, including by the opposition, the judiciary and the United States, which has warned that the reform "undermines the independence of the judiciary" and gives the ruling party control over the legal system.

President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum wrote in a statement on X that the reform will mean "more democracy for everyone".

The proposal will now be discussed further in Mexico's Senate.

Politicians were forced to vote in gymnasiums after protests

The vote on the criticized bill to elect judges through elections in Mexico was delayed after large protests outside Congress, international news agencies report. Protesters blocked the entrance to Congress on Tuesday afternoon local time, forcing politicians to vote in a gymnasium.

Critics of the bill claim, among other things, that it would undermine the independence of the judiciary.

"The party with the majority could take control of the judicial branch, and that would practically be the end of democracy," said 37-year-old protester Javier Reyes to the AP.

The vote, which lasted over twelve hours, ended with a majority voting in favour. The proposal will now be discussed further in the Senate.
