The elections in Venezuela

"Maduro has lost touch with reality"

The opposition in Venezuela is sharply criticizing President Nicolás Maduro and his government after a court in the country gave the go-ahead to arrest opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia. In a post on X, the opposition's other leader, Maria Corina Machado, writes that Maduro has lost touch with reality - and crossed a new line.

"Venezuelan people and democracies around the world are more united than ever in our quest for freedom," she writes, according to the AP.

The announcement that González Urrutia may be arrested comes just over a month after the disputed presidential election. The government led by Maduro accuses the opposition politician of conspiracy, falsification of documents and unjust seizure of power in connection with the election.

The official election result - which gave Maduro the victory - has in turn been questioned by the EU, the US and several South American countries.

Court wants to arrest Venezuela's opposition leader

A court in Venezuela has given the go-ahead to authorities in the country to arrest the opposition's presidential candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia. That's what international news agencies write. The announcement comes just over a month after the disputed presidential election in July, when both the opposition and incumbent President Nicolás Maduro declared themselves victorious.

The prosecutor claims that the opposition politician was guilty of a series of crimes in connection with the election, including conspiracy, falsification of documents and unjust seizure of power. González Urrutia has remained in hiding since the presidential election, fearing arrest.

The official election result - which means a third term for Maduro - has been questioned by both the US, the EU and several South American countries.
