Green light for same-sex marriage in Thailand: "Congratulations to everyone's love"

Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn has signed into law the bill that makes same-sex marriage legal in the country. This means that same-sex couples will be able to marry from January next year, AP writes.

"Congratulations on everyone's love," writes Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on X, along with the hashtag #LoveWins.

The law has been in the works for a long time in Thailand. According to the news agency, it has been delayed due to stiff opposition from the country's often conservative government.

Thailand thus becomes the third country in Asia to allow same-sex marriage, after Taiwan and Nepal.

The law allowing same-sex marriage is a milestone for Thailand - a country where it used to be very difficult to love whoever you want. That is what 27-year-old Thai Kuchanok Khantiphong tells AP.
