Denmark to introduce conscription for women as early as next year

Denmark's planned conscription for women is being postponed by two years, AFP reports.

- Given the current defense and security situation, the armed forces need to recruit more people, says Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen in a statement.

Denmark does not have a conscription requirement like in Sweden, but a lottery that will be relevant if there are not enough volunteers.

With the new announcement, women who turn 18 after July 1 this year will be relevant for next year's lottery.

EU follows Sweden's lead - homes must be prepared for war

The EU wants every household in the 27 countries of the union to have a three-day survival kit, says Hadja Lahbib, the EU's commissioner for crisis management, ahead of a new preparedness strategy being presented on Wednesday.

“Knowing what to do in case of danger and testing different scenarios is also a way to prevent panic,” Lahbib told AFP.

The EU’s new strategy has been inspired by Nordic countries such as Sweden, which have increased the preparation of their populations for crises or wars, the news agency writes.
