Greenland's future

Frederiksen raises the tone ahead of unwelcome US visit: "Putting unacceptable pressure"

Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is taking the US's planned visit to Greenland this week seriously. She says so, according to Danish TV2.

- It is clear that this is not a visit that is about what Greenland needs or what Greenland wants right now, says Frederiksen.

According to Frederiksen, the US is putting "unacceptable pressure" on Denmark and Greenland - pressure they will resist.

On Thursday, US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, Vice President's wife Usha Vance and Energy Secretary Chris Wright are expected to travel to Greenland. The US administration claims that it is a private visit.

Donald Trump has said on several occasions that he wants Greenland to become American, while a large majority of Greenlanders do not want to become part of the US.

JD Vance will also go to Greenland on Friday

US Vice President JD Vance is traveling to Greenland on Friday, he announced on X.

Vance is thus accompanying his wife Usha Vance and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz on the uninvited visit.

- There was so much commotion around Usha's visit this Friday that I decided I didn't want her to have all the fun alone, Vance says in a video clip.

Vance says that Denmark has ignored Greenland for too long.

- We think we can take things in a different direction.
