JD Vance has been described as the president's pit bull who obeys the slightest signal.
But in secret chats that have now been leaked, it sounds different.
"I'm not sure the president is aware of how inconsistent this is," he writes in the chat.
Quick version
Jeffrey Goldberg, a reporter for The Atlantic, was accidentally added to the White House's secret war chat. The chat on the Signal app included 18 of the absolute highest-ranking figures, including the secretary of defense, secretary of state, and director of the CIA. Even Vice President JD Vance himself was involved and very active in the chat group.
Officially, the vice president has always been loyal and has the president's back. But in the leaked chat group, he criticizes Trump.
Trump was not on it
“I’m not sure the president realizes how inconsistent this is with his message on Europe right now. There is an additional risk that we will see a moderate to large increase in oil prices,” Vance writes, continuing:
“I am prepared to support the consensus of the group and keep those concerns to myself. But there is a strong case for postponing this for a month, to do the work of communicating why this is important, to see where the economy is, etc.”
President Donald Trump himself was not on the chat group and, by his own account, was unaware of its existence. When asked about it by reporters in the Oval Office, he claimed that this was the first he had heard of it.
Vance: Supports Administration
Following The Atlantic’s revelation, JD Vance has come out and said he still stands completely behind the president — despite how his messages have been interpreted.
“Vice President Vance unequivocally supports the foreign policy of this administration. The president and the vice president have had subsequent conversations on this issue and are in complete agreement,” said William Martin, a spokesman for JD Vance.
