NATO's future
Former NATO chief: Spend like during the Cold War

The transatlantic relationship is collapsing before our eyes and Europe's defense spending must return to the levels that were during the Cold War, writes former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen in an opinion piece for The Economist.

The current spending target of 2 percent of GDP must become an immediate requirement for 3 percent of GDP, rising to 4 percent by 2028, writes Rasmussen.

"Europe must ensure that they can act independently of the United States".

For Sweden, 4 percent of GDP would correspond to approximately 100 billion kronor more than what we are expected to spend on defense this year.

On Sunday, talks between the US and Ukrainian delegations were held at the same hotel. After the meeting, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov described the talks as productive.

UN scales down operation in Gaza after Israeli attack

The UN scales down its operation in Gaza after an Israeli attack last week, reports AP.

The explosion at the UN agency Unops headquarters in central Gaza killed one UN employee and injured five.

“Based on the information currently available, a tank was behind the attack,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ spokesman Stéphane Dujarric in a statement.

Dujarric also stated that the UN “has taken the difficult decision to reduce the organization’s footprint in Gaza, even as humanitarian needs increase.”

Israel has denied being behind the attack.
