Political situation in Turkey

Protesters arrested after insulting Erdogan

Turkish police have arrested dozens of people for insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his family during the past week's protests, the Financial Times reports.

The arrests include 43 so-called "provocateurs," Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya told X on Tuesday. He further wrote that police are looking for more suspects who allegedly made "horrible insults against the president, his late mother and family."

1,133 other protesters have been arrested across the country in the past week following protests against the arrest of Erdogan's rival Ekrem Imamoglu. Among them are photographers and journalists who covered the demonstrations.

The ban on demonstrations in Turkey is extended

The ban on demonstrations in Turkey is being extended until April 1, the governor of the capital Ankara announced, according to AFP.

The ban applies to all types of protests across the country. However, the ban has been largely ignored as hundreds of thousands of people have taken part in mass demonstrations since the country's main opposition leader, Ekrem Imamoglu, was arrested on March 19 and subsequently imprisoned.

More than 1,100 people have been arrested in connection with the protests, authorities said on Monday.
