Angola drops out as mediator in Congo conflict
Angola will drop out as mediator in the conflict between Congo-Kinshasa and the Rwandan-backed M23 militia, Reuters reports. In his capacity as chairman of the African Union, Angolan President Joao Lourenco has tried to arrange talks between the parties.
Last week, however, the M23 chose to drop out of a planned meeting in the Angolan capital Luanda late. In a statement, Lourenco says that Angola needs to “relinquish its responsibility as mediator” in order to focus more on the overall issues of the African Union.
Another African nation will be appointed to take over the task.
Despite promises – M23 rebels remain in captured city
The hope of a ceasefire between the Congo-Kinshasa army and the Rwandan-backed M23 rebel group appears to have been dashed again, Reuters reports. This after M23 failed to fulfill its promise to withdraw from the town of Walikale, which the group captured last week.
M23, for its part, claims that the army has not withdrawn its attack drones from the town, as promised.
Residents of the town confirmed on Monday that M23 members are still in place in the town, 48 hours after they said they would withdraw.
