Greenland's Future

Prime Minister Condemns Upcoming US Visit: "Very Aggressive"

Greenlandic Prime Minister Múte Egede has condemned "foreign interference" ahead of the US visit this week, AFP reports. He accuses Washington of interfering in Greenland's political affairs.

- It should be said clearly that our integrity and democracy must be respected without foreign interference, he says.

He also states that the planned visit by, among others, Vice President's wife Usha Vance is "very aggressive".

US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright are also participating in the visit. The White House claims that it is a tourist trip to visit attractions and watch a dog sled race.

Greenland's leader says no to meeting with the US

There will be no meeting between the Greenlandic leadership and the American delegation that will visit Greenland later this week. This is what Múte B Egede, acting leader of the Greenlandic government Naalakkersuisut, says, according to TV2.

"The Americans have received clear information that a meeting can only take place when a new Naalakkersuisut has taken office," he writes on Facebook.

The US has announced that the vice president's wife Usha Vance will visit the island later this week in what is described as a "private visit." She is accompanied by, among others, national security adviser Mike Waltz and the US Secretary of Energy.

Political scientist: Lie that the trip to Greenland is private

The upcoming visit of the US vice president's wife Usha Vance to Greenland is a "political stunt." This is what Drude Dahlerup, professor emerita in political science at Stockholm University, tells DN.

She says that it is not at all about a “private tourist trip” as the White House has claimed.

– Everyone knows that is a lie. I would go crazy if I were a Greenlandic politician, she says.

Usha Vance will be followed by a delegation that is expected to include national security adviser Mike Waltz. According to the official White House statement, Vance will visit historical sites and watch a dog sled race.

Expert: Trump's offensive has the opposite effect on Greenland

The timing of American invitations to Greenland is actually perfect, but now Donald Trump has overplayed his hand and seriously, writes the New York Times in a news analysis.

Trump's move to send the national security adviser and the vice president's wife to Greenland uninvited has already gone awry and is having the "opposite effect" to what the Americans want, says Danish political analyst Lars Trier Mogensen to the newspaper.

Greenland, where many want to come to terms with Denmark's colonial history and want to see independence, will now instead "seek security in the status quo" and that is Denmark, Mogensen predicts.

- This offensive is pushing Greenland away from the United States, he tells the New York Times.
