The president of the exchange region submits his resignation
Aslan Bzhani, president of the Russian-occupied region of Abkhazia in Georgia, has submitted his resignation. Kyiv Independent reports.
Violent protests erupted last week in the region's capital after the government presented a new bill that would, among other things, allow Russians to own property in the area.
Bzhani promises to resign if the protesters still occupying the government building return home. If they do not, however, he will withdraw his resignation, according to a press release.
The criticism: Georgian police are beating protesters
The police in Georgia have arrested and beaten demonstrators who protested the election results, reports the independent TV channel Pirveli.
Tens of thousands of people have taken part in the demonstrations against what they say was an election rigged in favor of the ruling pro-Russian party Georgian Dream.
Georgian police on Tuesday morning broke up a protest in which demonstrators blocked a road outside Tbilisi University. In videos posted by Pirveli, police are seen hitting protesters and journalists at the scene.
