EU trial begins against Hungary for LGBTQ laws

The European Court of Justice has opened the trial against Hungary for the country's laws against LGBTQ people, reports AFP.

- It is a direct and serious attack on the rule of law and European society in general, said one of the European Commission's lawyers in his opening speech.

The laws prohibit information on LGBTQ issues, including sex education for children, and equate homosexuality with pedophilia. If Hungary is convicted by the European Court of Justice, the country could be sentenced to heavy fines and deprived of its right to vote in the EU.

Although the legal process against Hungary began two years ago, several EU countries are enacting similar laws, according to the Brussels Times.

Spain introduces amnesty for up to 900,000 migrants

Spain's left-wing government is going against the international trend and introducing an amnesty for immigrants who are in the country without a permit, AFP reports.

The idea is to fill the need for labor and rejuvenate the aging population - but also to improve the vulnerable situation of migrants, according to Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

The amnesty is part of a larger reform which means that it will be easier to get and extend visas also for work, studies and family reunification. The government expects to get 300,000 new legal residents per year for the next three years.
