The Middle East crisis The Gaza war

Analysis: Netanyahu's main hope now is for the US to declare war on the ICC

After the ICC's arrest warrant, Benjamin Netanyahu has one hope: that the US, which is outside the ICC, declares "total war" against the court. Amir Tibon writes for Haaretz.

It could partly mean sanctions against those involved in the decision, but also that the US pressures its allies and thus "starves" the court, he continues.

"Trump would say to leaders like French President Macron and British Prime Minister Starmer: Let Netanyahu land on your soil, or face the consequences for your relationship with the United States."

When ICC judge Karim Khan first sought arrest warrants against Netanyahu, many Israelis waved away the war crimes charges. This time too, many agree with Netanyahu's description of the court as anti-Semitic, writes Nic Robertson for CNN.

"They will certainly end up behind Netanyahu, because the country as a whole feels besieged and misunderstood."

Whatever the arrest warrant leads to, the damage to Netanyahu's and Gallant's reputations is irreversible – they are now wanted war criminals, writes Alistair Bunkall for Sky News.

"It's a stamp they can never wash off."

Netanyahu: The ICC has become the enemy of humanity

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu describes Thursday as "a dark day in the history of nations" after the ICC's arrest warrant against him, reports AFP.

- The International Criminal Court in The Hague, which was founded to protect humanity, has today become the enemy of humanity, he says in a video speech.

He calls the accusations of war crimes "completely unfounded," adding that no "anti-Israel decisions" will stop him from continuing to protect the country.
