Two Danish citizens have died in Laos, the Danish Foreign Ministry confirms, according to BT.
According to several media, it concerns two women in their 20s who were poisoned after drinking alcohol.
Now the Australian government issues a warning to tourists.
In addition to the Danish women, two 19-year-old Australian women have also been poisoned and flown to a hospital in Thailand where their condition is critical, according to the Australian ABC.
Now the Australian government is issuing a warning to tourists to be careful with alcohol-based drinks in the Southeast Asian country.
"Several foreign nationals, including Australians, have in November 2024 become victims of suspected cases of methanol poisoning by consuming alcoholic beverages," writes the government's Smart traveler website.
Ten people in addition to the two Danish and the two Australian women are said to have become ill from alcohol, according to ABC.
However, it is not certain that it is methanol poisoning.
The owner of the hostel where the Australian women stayed told the ABC the poisoning could not have come from the hostel's bar. He instead points out that the travelers had been out at another bar.
"We haven't done anything wrong, that's for sure. I really take care of all the guests staying at our hotel and hostel," Nana Hostel owner Duong van Huan told ABC.
Methanol is a form of alcohol that occurs in technical spirits, solvents and fuels for spirit cookers and model engines, according to the poison information center.
The Danish Foreign Ministry has not confirmed the cause of death for the two dead citizens
