Political situation in Australia

Albanese in the driver's seat as Australia goes to the polls

Incumbent Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his center-left Labor party appear to have the wind in their sails ahead of Saturday's election in Australia, Reuters reports. All polls indicate that Labor has a slight advantage over the conservative opposition.

However, he himself does not want to claim victory in advance.

- In polls, there are many who have not yet made up their minds. We have a mountain to climb, he said during an election rally on Friday, according to AFP.

Albanese was trailing in opinion polls as recently as February, but his main opponent, the Conservatives' Peter Dutton, has had a tough spring. Among other things, he was forced to back down from an unpopular proposal to ban public employees from working from home, Reuters reports.

Dutton has also struggled to distance himself from comparisons between himself and Donald Trump, as his policies in some areas resemble Trump's. Among other things, he wants to scrap a number of climate measures and make significant cuts in public administration.

Trump on the verge of lowering a conservative favorite

As recently as February, the conservative opposition looked set to win the election in Australia, which takes place this weekend. But since Donald Trump took office as president in the US, support for the conservatives and their party leader Peter Dutton has fallen sharply, writes NBC.

The pattern is recognizable from the recent election in Canada, where concerns about how the conservative party would handle Trump caused them to lose what looked like a sure victory.

Since taking office in 2022, Dutton has pushed his party to the right and on some points clearly shaped his policies with Trump as a role model. Among other things, he wants to make significant cuts in public administration and reduce immigration.

The connection to Trump is a clear burden for Dutton, says John Blaxland, a professor of international security.

– Dutton embraced, perhaps a little overenthusiastically, Trump's election victory without understanding how difficult it would make it for him, he says.
