Political situation in Australia

Incumbent Labor government wins election in Australia

The social democratic Labor government looks set to remain in office after the federal election in Australia on Saturday. This is shown by the first exit polls published.

Anthony Albanese is thus expected to continue as prime minister.

"It is a remarkable turnaround from the beginning of the year when opinion polls showed Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at record lows," writes BBC reporter Tiffanie Turnball.

At 12:30 p.m., Labor has 33 percent of the vote, while opposition leader Peter Dutton and his Liberal Party have around 30 percent of the vote, according to both Sky News and The Guardian's live updates.

Analysis: Australia opts out of “domestic Trumpism”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's election campaign was as powerful as opposition leader Peter Dutton's was a failure, writes ABC's Jacob Greber on Australian election day.

The social democratic Labor-led government appears to be staying in power and Greber notes that voters are saying no to what he describes as "domestic Trumpism", referring to Dutton's praise of the American president and that the tariff war may have strengthened Albanese.

"Paradoxically, this is happening at the same time as the political core is becoming increasingly divided and multifaceted."

The Guardian's Ben Smee notes that Dutton also appears to be losing the seat in parliament he was elected to 24 years ago. It is described as a shock announcement for the Liberal Party he represents. Smee describes how interest at the party's election vigil cooled during the evening as the picture became clearer, to the point that one person started watching rugby instead.

"Seven months ago, many of the loyal members were standing in the same room, cheering loudly over a victory in the state election."
