National security adviser Mike Waltz is leaving his job at the White House.
Donald Trump has now confirmed this.
Waltz will instead become UN ambassador.
It is on Truth Social that Donald Trump confirms that Mike Waltz is leaving his post as national security adviser.
It is the first major departure from the Trump administration.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio will temporarily step into the role of national security adviser.
As recently as this morning, American time, Waltz appeared on American television and talked about the peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, according to James Matthews, who is a Sky News USA correspondent.
Matthews tells the television channel that the news likely came as a surprise to him.
Added journalist to security chat
Mike Waltz found himself in a security scandal after he accidentally added The Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg to the high-profile war chat on Signal.
The group discussed attacks on Houthi rebels in Yemen with, among others, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Trump's Vice President JD Vance.
The security adviser has said that he takes "full responsibility" for the chat group that he created.
Trump's U-turn
Donald Trump has previously expressed his support for Waltz.
- Michael Waltz has learned a lesson, and he is a good man, Trump said at the end of March.
Now he has turned.
An anonymous source with good insight tells CBS News that Trump believes that enough time has passed for Waltz and Wong's departures to be seen as part of a reorganization within the administration.
