Russian invasion

Negotiations
Ukraine and Russia have begun a large-scale prisoner exchange

Ukraine and Russia have begun a large-scale prisoner exchange in which 390 Ukrainian citizens have been released from Russian captivity and Ukraine has released an equal number of Russian prisoners of war. This is what Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyj writes on Telegram.

"It is very important to get everyone home," he writes, adding that more prisoners will be released over the weekend.

When Ukraine and Russia negotiated in Turkey last week, they agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners each. US President Donald Trump congratulates both sides on the prisoner exchange in a post on Truth Social.

"This could lead to something big?", he adds.

Ex-adviser: Trump knows Putin doesn't want peace

US President Donald Trump no longer believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to end the war in Ukraine, according to WSJ sources. This does not surprise Trump's former national security adviser John Bolton.

- I think Trump has understood this for a long time. He just does not want to portray his friend Putin in a bad way in public, Bolton says in SVT's Aktuellt.

He says that Trump handles US national relations the way he handles his personal relations - and that Putin takes advantage of the fact that Trump considers the two of them to be friends.

- Normally, you don't want your friends to get hurt. You don't want to embarrass them or criticize them publicly.

The fighting
2,000 prisoners exchanged between Russia and Ukraine

Ukraine and Russia have carried out a "comprehensive" prisoner exchange, says Donald Trump, who writes on Truth social that "this could lead to something big".

Last week, the parties agreed to exchange around 2,000 prisoners during talks in Istanbul, which was described as by far the largest during the conflict.

The agreement was the only concrete result of the talks between Russia and Ukraine, which began with international hopes for a temporary ceasefire.

Sanctions
G7 leaders open to new sanctions against Russia

This week's G7 summit in Canada ended in agreement despite tensions in the wake of Donald Trump's tariffs, AFP reports. "We note that uncertainty about economic policy has decreased from the peak level, and we will work together to achieve further progress," the countries wrote in a final communiqué.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent experienced no major disagreements.

- I think the meeting went very well, he tells the news agency.

At the same time, the G7 countries are opening up to tightening sanctions against Russia if the country does not agree to a ceasefire.
