Extreme weather in Europe

Storms heading towards Denmark – more than a month's worth of rain expected in one day

The Danish weather agency DMI is warning of "very dangerous weather" in parts of the country. Heavy rain is expected to hit Denmark on Monday.

The warning applies to Eastern Jutland and large parts of Funen and Zealand, among other areas.

According to a forecast from DMI, some places could receive as much as 237 millimeters of rain in one day until Tuesday evening. That would break the previous daily record of 168.9 millimeters set in 1931, writes Danish TV2.

According to Jyllands-Posten, more conservative forecasts of 100 millimeters would be one and a half times the amount of rain that usually falls in Denmark during the month of July.

The insurance company Tryg has sent out text messages to 150,000 Danes with information on how to prevent and minimize damage to their property during the rainy weather.

Danish crisis team activated: “Help the tourists”

A state crisis team has been formed in Denmark to coordinate the authorities’ work after the warning of very dangerous amounts of rain, reports Ekstra Bladet.

The police on Funen are also issuing a call on social media:

“Help tourists with information so that they stay away from low-lying areas and waterways, both at campsites and with caravans. Many summer houses are rented out to tourists, make them aware of the risks.”

A large part of Denmark, including East Jutland, Funen and all of Zealand in addition to the northern parts, is covered by the category 3 warning – the highest possible. In the rest of the country, a category 2 warning is in effect.

The rainy weather will intensify on Monday. Until Tuesday evening, in some places as much as 237 millimeters may fall in one day – several times more than what usually falls in a normal month of July.

Rain has reached Denmark – “double torrential rain” measured

Heavy rain has begun to move in over Denmark, Danish media report. The highest possible warning level for very dangerous weather has been issued over large parts of the country.

“The rain is approaching, it is intensifying over the Baltic Sea region and moving towards Funen and Zealand,” writes the meteorological authority DMI on X.

On the island of Falster south of Zealand, “double torrential rain” has been measured, writes Ekstra Bladet. Torrential rain is classified as 15 millimeters of rain within 30 minutes – on Falster it has fallen over 30 millimeters in the same amount of time.

“Take care of yourselves and each other,” writes Minister for Emergency Situations Torsten Schack Pedersen on social media.
