Thailand-Cambodia border conflict

Foreign Minister: “Received information” about Gripen

Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard (M) has received information that Thailand used Jas 39 Gripen planes in connection with an attack on Cambodia. In a comment to Omni, the minister writes that the government is closely following developments.

“It is of utmost importance that international law is respected and that all parties work for dialogue and a peaceful de-escalation of the situation,” she writes.

It is the Thai newspaper The Nation that reports that Thailand used the Swedish planes in the ongoing fighting.

Trump: Thailand and Cambodia want peace

US President Donald Trump has spoken to the prime ministers of Cambodia and Thailand. He writes this on Truth Social.

“We happen to be negotiating trade agreements with both countries, but we don’t want to make any agreements with either country if they are fighting each other - and I’ve told them so!”, he wrote in a post.

He wrote that both countries want an immediate ceasefire and peace.

“After speaking to both parties, a ceasefire, peace and prosperity seem to be a given. We’ll see soon!”

Komsan’s family was buying snacks – killed in attack

More than 30 people, most of them civilians, have been killed in fighting that erupted between Thailand and Cambodia this week. Komsan Prachan’s wife and their two children are among the victims, he told Reuters in an interview.

Komsan, 40, says that the whole family stopped at a gas station near the house after picking up his 14-year-old daughter and nine-year-old son from school. When his wife and two children went inside to buy snacks, an artillery shell hit the building.

“I lost all hope. I could only stand and watch,” he says.

Over 130,000 people have been forced to leave their homes because of the fighting.

The border conflict — the point

  • Armed fighting broke out between Thailand and Cambodia on the border on July 24, 2025.
  • Thailand has carried out airstrikes with F-16 planes and Jas Gripen planes against Cambodian targets, and both countries have closed their borders and recalled their ambassadors.
  • Over 100,000 Thais have been evacuated from border provinces and a couple of thousand Cambodians have fled villages near the border after the clashes.
  • Cambodia has accused Thailand of using cluster bombs, while Thailand has accused Cambodia of mining the border area; both countries rejected each other's accusations.
  • The UN Security Council has scheduled an emergency meeting on the conflict, and the Swedish embassy is urging Swedes in the area to be vigilant and follow the authorities' advice.
