New fighting – despite promises of ceasefire talks
New shelling has taken place in the border area between Thailand and Cambodia, despite hopes of a ceasefire. This is reported by AFP.
New artillery fire broke out early this morning, local time, at two temples in northeastern Thailand where a majority of the previous fighting had taken place, says a spokesman for the Cambodian Defense Ministry.
However, on Saturday, the two parties announced that they would begin talks to reach a ceasefire after US President Donald Trump spoke with the countries' prime ministers. They are said to have agreed to "quickly work towards" a ceasefire.
The fighting started on Wednesday and the violence between the countries is the worst in years. So far, a total of 33 people have been killed on both sides and more than 200,000 people have been displaced from their homes.
