The Thailand-Cambodia border conflict

Thailand in arms negotiations with Sweden – in the middle of the conflict

Thailand has eleven Swedish Jas 39 Gripen planes and is in the middle of negotiations to buy more, writes SVT Nyheter.

If the unrest between Thailand and Cambodia escalates, there is a risk that the deal will be stopped, according to Martin Lundmark, a lecturer at the Swedish National Defense University.

Thailand used American F16 planes in the attack on Cambodia on Thursday, writes the channel.

Thailand has previously said that the Gripen is the country's "future fighter aircraft".

The approval of the deal is made by the Swedish government, as Swedish arms exports are strictly regulated by the state. Assessments will be made by the agency ISP, the Inspectorate for Strategic Products.

- They are looking at whether the recipient country can be considered stable and credible and can handle this material in a way that does not harm Sweden's security policy and military interests, says Martin Lundmark.

Cambodia calls for ceasefire in conflict

Cambodia wants an “immediate ceasefire” in the conflict with Thailand, reports AFP. The statement came from the country’s UN envoy on Friday.

– Cambodia is calling for an immediate ceasefire - unconditionally - and we also call for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, said Cambodia’s UN ambassador Chhea Keo after today’s emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the flare-up of the conflict between the countries.

Thailand has previously said it is ready for talks.

The border conflict — it’s about the matter

  • Armed fighting broke out between Thailand and Cambodia on the border on July 24, 2025, which led to at least 9 civilians being killed and several soldiers being injured.
  • Thailand carried out airstrikes with F-16 aircraft against Cambodian targets, and both countries closed their borders and recalled their ambassadors.
  • Over 100,000 Thais were evacuated from border provinces and a couple of thousand Cambodians fled villages near the border after the clashes.
  • Cambodia accused Thailand of using cluster bombs, while Thailand accused Cambodia of mining the border area; both countries rejected each other's accusations.
  • The UN Security Council planned an emergency meeting on the conflict, and the Swedish embassy urged Swedes in the area to be vigilant and follow the advice of the authorities.
