Syrian War  The Fall of the Assad Regime
France Lifts Arrest Warrant Against al-Assad

The French Supreme Court has lifted the arrest warrant against Syria's ousted dictator Bashar al-Assad, reports TT.

The arrest warrant accuses al-Assad of the chemical attacks in the country in 2013, which killed over 1,400 people. He is suspected of serious war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The court believes that the warrant is invalid because al-Assad had presidential immunity until 2023 when it was issued, which prevents him from being convicted of a crime. The current arrest warrant is therefore lifted because it is not possible to arrest him, but he may be subject to new arrest warrants in the future, according to the court.

In addition to al-Assad, the arrest warrant was also issued against his brother Maher al-Assad and two Syrian generals. The arrest warrant against them remains in effect.
