The Escape to Europe
54 Minors Swim to Ceuta in Bad Weather
At least 54 minors and around 30 adults have swum from Morocco to the bordering Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta, writes El País. The attempt to cross was made in bad weather with fog and waves.
According to the television channel RTVE, the Spanish border police worked all night to rescue the swimmers. The minors were then taken into custody by the authorities, who asked the Spanish government for help. According to Ceuta, the system is now so overloaded that it cannot handle any more young people arriving.
“Don’t abandon us, this must be resolved,” Juan Rivas from Ceuta’s regional government told reporters on Sunday.
Climate Threat Global Challenges
Climate Change Threatens Important Pacific Fisheries
Climate change is threatening the economically important tuna fisheries of island nations in the Pacific Ocean, according to a report in the Washington Post.
Scientists estimate that the tuna will be driven into international waters, where richer countries with large fishing fleets, such as China, Japan, South Korea and the United States, will be able to catch the fish without paying license fees.
The shift is described as another danger for Tuvalu, for example, whose existence is already threatened by rising sea levels and increasingly powerful storms.
Europe's heat waves
Heat record in Turkey – 50.5 degrees
50.5 degrees was measured in the city of Silopi in southeastern Turkey on Friday. This means a new national heat record, writes TT and refers to the country's Ministry of Environment on X.
The heat has caused the country and other parts of the region to be affected by forest fires. At least 10 people have died and several have been injured so badly that they need hospital treatment, writes The Guardian.
Both airplanes and helicopters have been used in the work of extinguishing fires. Large fires have been reported in the cities of Bilecik, Sakarya and Karabük in northern Turkey, which has led to the evacuation of several villages.
