The fighting
Destruction to lushness – is the forest a “poison bomb?”

Two years after the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka hydroelectric dam in Ukraine, nature has returned and the forests have spread. The Guardian writes in a report.

Ecologists see the forest as a rare chance to preserve one of Europe’s largest interconnected freshwater systems, and warn that any reconstruction of the dam could destroy the young nature in the area.

At the same time, scientists warn that the forest could be a “poison bomb”. There are fears that heavy metals and chemical pollutants spread from industries upstream could move further up the food chain and threaten both wildlife and humans.

The negotiations
Direct meeting between Putin and Zelenskyj discussed

Discussions are currently underway about direct talks between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyj, reports AFP.

According to the news agency, Ukraine hopes for a meeting between the two presidents, where US President Donald Trump could act as a mediator.

“We have to end the war, which will probably start with a meeting between the leaders,” Zelensky said, adding that the discussion about a possible conversation is seen as progress.

US-Russia relations
Trump wants to renew anti-nuclear agreement with Putin

Donald Trump has spoken about the nuclear agreement between the US and Russia for the first time since returning to the White House, Reuters reports.

The agreement, known as “New START”, was signed in 2010 and expires in February. It includes, among other things, restrictions on strategic nuclear weapons and is the last remaining agreement on disarmament between the world’s two largest nuclear powers.

“It’s not an agreement you want to let expire. We’ve started working on it,” says Trump, emphasizing that “letting go of nuclear restrictions” is bad.
