Middle East crisis

Gaza War
Israel demolishes entire neighborhoods in Gaza – may be war crime

Israel has carried out controlled demolitions of thousands of buildings in the southern part of the Gaza Strip since March. These include residential buildings, schools and other premises. Entire neighborhoods and villages have disappeared. This is shown by the BBC's analysis of satellite images and video footage.

Clips show how buildings implode and are demolished with excavators, even those that appear to be completely undamaged.

Several legal experts say that this may constitute a war crime. Civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected under the Geneva Convention and this goes "far beyond" approved exceptions, according to one of the experts. Analysts have different theories: Israel wants to create "security zones", make room for the criticized "humanitarian city" or force the Palestinians to emigrate.

However, one of the experts defends the IDF and believes that there is support for the demolitions as the area is a war zone.

The BBC has listed its findings and demanded that the Israel Defense Forces provide specific reasons for each demolition, which they have not responded to. Instead, the IDF responds that Hamas is hiding among civilians.

USA vs Iran
Data contradicts White House: “Unnecessary mistake”

The Pentagon continues to claim that the attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities have knocked out Tehran’s ability to develop nuclear weapons, writes the Washington Post. This despite sources telling several media outlets, based on American intelligence, that damage to two of the three facilities was limited.

Experts the newspaper spoke to say that Iran’s facilities have been significantly damaged but that it is unclear how quickly Iran could resume attempts to acquire nuclear weapons, if that will is now present. One source describes it as the White House claiming victory in advance with previous statements.

– It appears to be an unnecessary mistake.

US and Iranian attacks – the point is this

  • On the night of June 22, the US carried out an attack on three Iranian nuclear facilities: Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan, with B-2 bombers and Tomahawk missiles.
  • According to US and Israeli authorities, the attack destroyed large parts of Iran's enrichment capacity, but intelligence from the Pentagon and European sources shows that the program was delayed but not completely destroyed.
  • Iran has stopped cooperation with the UN nuclear agency IAEA and denied inspectors access to the facilities, which has been condemned by several EU countries.

  • There is disagreement about how much enriched uranium was destroyed. Some estimates indicate that up to 60 percent of the stockpile survived the attacks.
