Miners trapped for 12 hours – rescued

18 workers in Colombia have been rescued after the gold mine they were working in collapsed, reports Colombian newspaper El Espectador.

The country’s Minister of Mines and Energy Edwin Palma thanks everyone involved in the rescue effort in a post on X. “We remain vigilant about the situation,” he writes.

The mine collapsed when a loaded elevator came loose at the mine entrance, causing the structure to collapse. Rescue efforts to get the workers out took 12 hours.

Collapsed mine was not “formally authorized”

The gold mine that collapsed in Colombia was not a “formally authorized operation.” Local authorities say this, according to the newspaper El Tiempo.

The mine is located in Antioquia in northwestern Colombia, where the industry is strong. In a statement, the company says it “worked intensively” to save its employees.

It was when a fully loaded elevator came loose and pulled the entrance with it that the collapse was a fact. For 12 hours, 18 workers were trapped before they were finally rescued, all unharmed.
