Russian invasion

The world's response

"The war changed the playing field - the EU must rethink"

It is no longer possible to separate civilian and military research - therefore the EU must reconsider its innovation policy. This is what the CEO of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, Sylvia Schwaag Serger, writes on DN Debatt.

The war in Ukraine fundamentally changed the playing field, but research with so-called "dual use" potential, i.e. technology that is used civilianly and in defense systems, is still excluded.

"But today's technology, in everything from AI to biotechnology, is fundamentally cross-border and the speed of technological development is constantly increasing," writes Schwaag Serger.

Now she is calling on the EU to formulate a new strategy that "protects both scientific openness and global security."

Expert: Putin likely would have taken advantage of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte suggests in an interview with the New York Times that China could seek help from Russia if it decides to attack Taiwan. The first thing Xi Jinping would do is ask Vladimir Putin for help by attacking NATO territory to keep Europe occupied, Rutte says.

– This is probably how it will go.

Dan Hamilton at the American think tank Brookings tells the Kyiv Independent that China probably wouldn't have even had to ask Russia.

– It's more likely that Russia would take advantage of an invasion of Taiwan to launch some form of further aggression in Europe, he says.

Source: Zelenskyy may replace ambassador to the US

Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump discussed replacing the Ukrainian ambassador to the US during a phone call on Friday, a source with good insight told Bloomberg.

The current Oksana Markarova has been ambassador since February 2021. The list of potential replacements includes Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, according to the information.

Ukraine reportedly wants to involve the US in the appointment to strengthen relations with Donald Trump.

Speculation about the poking of Markarova, who has remained in office despite her term actually being over, has been going on since last year.
