Political situation in South Korea
Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol arrested again
The deposed president of South Korea, Yoon Suk-Yeol, who has previously been charged with a crime, has been arrested and placed in solitary confinement again. This is due to the martial law he imposed in the country at the end of last year.
The arrest warrant was issued because the ex-president could “destroy evidence”.
Yoon Suk-Yeol is accused of leading a suspected coup attempt after declaring a state of emergency in the country and sending the military into parliament in early December.
A conviction could lead to life imprisonment or the death penalty.
Political situation in Mali
Mali coup leader appoints himself president
Mali junta leader Assimi Goita has appointed himself president. According to a new law published on Thursday, the mandate can be renewed “as many times as necessary” without a general election.
After military coups in 2020 and 2021, the military junta promised that Mali would return to a civilian democracy by March 2024.
It is unclear how strong support for Goita is in the country, but according to AFP, it is not non-existent: many see him as a reformist who dares to stand up to the West. At the same time, democracy activists have organized protests in the capital, Bamako, against the increasingly authoritarian rule.
