Situation in Congo-Kinshasa
Civilians continue to be killed in Congo-Kinshasa despite agreement
The Rwandan-backed militia group M23 killed at least 140 civilians in Congo-Kinshasa in July despite peace agreements and ceasefire negotiations. This is according to Human Rights Watch (HRW) in a new report.
According to HRW, the civilians were killed in 14 different villages in the Virunga National Park. The victims were mainly ethnic Hutus, many of them women and children. The killings were said to have taken the form of outright executions.
M23 denies having anything to do with the deaths and calls the information incorrect.

New Zealander on the run with his children for almost four years
A New Zealand man named Tom Phillips has been in hiding with his three children for almost four years. Now his family is urging him to come home.
– I miss you and being a part of your life. I really want to see you and the children, says his sister Rozzi Phillips according to The Guardian.
Phillips took his three children, who his former partner has custody of, and fled into the wilderness on Waikato Island just before Christmas 2021. They were last seen in October 2024 when they were filmed by some wild boar hunters. The police launched a search operation in the area but it was fruitless.
Trans rights
Three million Americans identify as trans
Around 2.8 million Americans, including 724,000 young people between the ages of 13 and 17, identify as transgender. The Guardian reports, citing a new study.
The researchers came to the figure by looking at national surveys and registry data from, among other things, healthcare and the justice system.
“Transgender people are a significant part of the population who have special needs and special barriers to getting them met. This must be taken into account by lawmakers,” says Jody Herman, one of those who conducted the study.
