Fed vs. inflation
Fed chief opens up for rate cut in speech: “A shift may be necessary”

Federal Reserve Chief Jerome Powell signaled during his speech in Jackson Hole on Friday that a shift in monetary policy may be necessary. He emphasized that the Fed is facing a challenging situation where inflation risks are on the upside, while downside risks to employment have increased.

Wall Street and the Stockholm Stock Exchange seemed to interpret the speech as the Fed chief opening up for a cut in September, and indices rose clearly during the speech, while long-term interest rates fell.

Protests in Serbia
Vucic opens up for talks – opposition critical

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is calling for dialogue between the government and the anti-regime protesters who have been protesting since November last year. In a live address to the nation, Vucic stated that he wants to resolve the conflict “through dialogue and talks” and not violence.

– We have to rebuild the country and get back to how we were nine months ago, he says according to Reuters.

The major protests have often been peaceful, but earlier in August several police officers and protesters were injured in connection with unrest. The opposition rejects Vucic's statement about talks.

– A president who resorts to violence is not someone you can have political talks with, says leader Savo Manojlovic.
