Analysis: No one dares to say that Emperor Trump is naked
For Donald Trump, red carpet summits come first and details later. Zolan Kanno-Youngs writes in an analysis in the New York Times about the frenetic attempts to achieve peace in Ukraine in recent days.
Diplomacy is now happening in reverse. Russia can continue its attacks on Ukraine while officials and politicians on several continents try to patch up the big holes in the peace plan, writes Kanno-Youngs.
Foreign Affairs writer Michael Kimmage is not impressed by the developments of recent days either. Trump lacks a plan to end the war, writes Kimmage, comparing the “spectacle” to HC Andersen’s “The Emperor’s New Clothes”. However, the boy who points out that the emperor is naked is conspicuous by his absence.
“So far, no one is willing to single out Emperor Trump.”
National Review's Jim Geraghty is more optimistic on Ukraine's behalf, pointing out that Trump and Ukraine are talking about a major arms deal and that the US seems to want to support peacekeeping forces in Ukraine from the air. Geraghty calls it a "pretty good consolation prize" for Ukraine.
Alaskan resident in a storm – received a motorcycle from Putin
Alaskan resident Mark Warren received an unexpected gift when Vladimir Putin visited Anchorage last week. On board the Russian government plane was a motorcycle of the Ural brand.
The background is that a Russian television company earlier in August made a feature in Alaska in which Warren participated. He said that sanctions against Russia had made it difficult to find spare parts for his Ural motorcycle.
Before Putin's meeting with Trump in Alaska, Warren received a call from a Russian government official who told him that he would be getting a new motorcycle. He remained skeptical, but the day after the meeting in Anchorage, it was handed over by some Russian government officials.
Warren tells the Anchorage Daily News that he is aware that many people are angry that he accepted an expensive gift from a wanted war criminal.
“I made all kinds of people angry, but I took it. I could have turned it down and just as many people would have been angry. I don’t care.
