Threats to biodiversity

Three countries agree to establish giant reserves

Mexico, Guatemala and Belize plan to establish a large nature reserve in the tropical rainforest area that stretches from southern Mexico to the northern parts of its Latin American neighbors, reports the AP news agency.

The plans cover almost six million hectares, which would make it the second largest nature reserve in Latin America.

The governments of the countries describe it not only as a measure to protect biodiversity, but also as a way to stop crime. According to the Washington Post, environmental organizations have long warned that the area contains airstrips used for drug trafficking.

Minister: We must take back control from the gangs

The plans to establish a huge nature reserve in southern Mexico and northern Guatemala and Belize are not primarily an environmental issue. This is what Guatemala's Environment Minister Patricia Orantes says, according to the AP.

She says the state must regain control from criminal gangs and human traffickers. Action is now required, says Orantes.

– The first thing is for the security forces to establish a presence, since the region has been abandoned to organized crime.

At the same time, the countries will create a body consisting of environmental authorities, with the aim of reviewing all upcoming projects and their impact on the area.
