US Blocks UN Gaza Ceasefire Proposal - Condemns It 'Irresponsible'
The United States vetoes a UN Security Council resolution on an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, reports AFP.
US UN Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield says the resolution is "irresponsible" and would jeopardize "sensitive negotiations".
On Monday, the Reuters news agency reported that the United States is preparing its own resolution on a ceasefire. In it, however, the wording is said to be vaguer than in the resolution that the US has now blocked. A cease-fire is to be introduced "as soon as practicable", says the draft of the American resolution.

Analysis: Israel's allies want to apply pressure - without giving Hamas command
That the US is said to be preparing its own UN resolution on a temporary ceasefire in Gaza is a clear sign that Washington's frustration with Israel continues to grow, writes Alistair Bunkall in an analysis for Sky News.
According to previous reports, however, the resolution contains wording that a cease-fire should be introduced "as soon as it is practically feasible", which is open to interpretation according to Bunkall. The wording is less sharp than in the resolution that the US blocked in the UN Security Council on Tuesday.
Patrick Wintour at The Guardian writes that the US, but also other allies with Israel, have a delicate task ahead. It is about the countries having to balance between, on the one hand, pushing Benjamin Netanyahu hard enough, and on the other hand, making sure that a ceasefire does not lead to Hamas taking command.
"It is against this multifaceted background that Israel will decide whether to still carry out a ground offensive in Rafah," writes Winotur.

Prince William on the war in Gaza: "Too many have been killed"
Britain's Crown Prince William wants to see an end to the fighting in Gaza, Reuters reports. In a statement, he says that "too many have been killed" and that he is "deeply concerned" by the humanitarian costs of the conflict.
Meddling in political matters is very unusual for the royal family, but Crown Prince William is said to be preparing to draw attention to the conflict in several ways. According to his co-workers, he must, among other things, direct the spotlight on the increasing anti-Semitism worldwide.
In 2018, Prince William became the first senior British royal to visit Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories. Next week he will meet young people in a synagogue to hear about their experiences of anti-Semitism.
