Political situation in Canada
Analysis: The big question – who can handle Trump best

For the first time in decades, domestic politics will not be the big issue when Canada goes to the polls, writes the BBC's Jessica Murphy in an analysis. Instead, the election will be about the country's sovereignty and its relationship with the United States.

Murphy points out that Canadians know that the next prime minister has no choice but to take on Trump.

"So the question many are asking is who can best handle the unpredictable American president," she writes

CBC's Aaron Wherry writes that the election will be one of only a handful in the country's history that is so clearly about a single main issue. But he also reminds us that the country is facing a series of crises that were there even before Trump took office in the White House.

"Trump's threat to Canada is real. But so is the climate issue and the cost of living crisis," he writes.

Iran: Open to indirect talks with US

Iran is open to indirect talks with the US on the nuclear issue after President Donald Trump called for negotiations, the country's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said, according to AFP.

He ruled out direct talks "until there is a change in the other side's attitude towards the Islamic Republic," according to the news agency.

US President Donald Trump wants to negotiate a new nuclear deal, after previously withdrawing from the one that the US and others concluded with Iran in 2015 after long negotiations.

The political situation in Israel
Netanyahu: Shin Bet investigated minister in secret

The head of Israel's internal security service Shin Bet, Ronen Bar, is said to have initiated an investigation of Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir from one of the government's far-right parties on his own initiative. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claims this, reports AFP.

Netanyahu recently tried to fire Bar, but the decision was at least temporarily blocked by Israel’s Supreme Court. This in turn led to the loss of Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara in a no-confidence vote in parliament.

According to new information, the Shin Bet has been investigating a far-right infiltration of the police with suspected links to Ben-Gvir for several months.
