Meloni celebrates 1,414 days in power
Giorgia Meloni has been Italian Prime Minister for 1,414 days – longer than any other Italian leader since the abolition of the monarchy in 1946.
Meloni and her party colleagues in the right-wing nationalist Brothers of Italy celebrated the record-breaking time in power with a big party in the port city of Bari.
In a speech that, according to the AP news agency, was occasionally interrupted by supporters chanting “Girorgia, Giorgia,” she praised her own government’s focus on stability and ability to stand firm even when the wind blows.
“There have been days when it felt like I was swimming in glue, but I never gave up and I won’t start,” she said to cheers from the audience.
Meloni’s government on Wednesday surpassed Silvio Berlusconi’s record from 2005 to 2010, when he was prime minister for 1,412 days.
