Boris Pistorius is not running for German chancellor
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is not available as the ruling Social Democrats' (SPD) chancellor candidate in the new election in February. He announced this in a clip on social media, according to German Focus.
- We have an excellent chancellor in Olaf Scholz, he says.
Pistorius, who according to Politico tops popularity polls among German politicians, has been highlighted both by observers and within the party as a possible successor to the unpopular Scholz.
The Minister of Defense has made himself popular, among other things, as a strong advocate of German support for Ukraine.
A source within the SPD told Reuters on Thursday evening that the party will confirm on Monday that Scholz will be their chancellor candidate.

Brazilian federal police have formally charged former president Jair Bolsonaro with coup attempts in 2022, Brazilian G1 reports.
The ex-president is one of a total of 37 accused. Among the others are Bolsonaro's vice-presidential candidate Walter Braga Netto, former security cabinet chief Augusto Heleno and former intelligence chief Alexandre Ramagem.
The Attorney General must now take a position on whether the charges should be brought before the Supreme Court, which will then start a legal process.
After Bolsonaro's election loss in the fall of 2022, Bolsonaro's supporters stormed several government buildings, and blocked roads, in protest against what they claimed was election fraud.
