India hits back at data: 'Ridiculous'
India has warned Canada that the diplomatic relationship between the two countries is being further damaged by reports that Prime Minister Narendra Modi knew of acts of violence against Shik activists in Canada in advance, reports AFP.
The information comes from the newspaper The Globe and Mail, which spoke to a source within the Canadian intelligence service.
"Such ridiculous statements to a newspaper allegedly made by a Canadian government source should be dismissed with the contempt they deserve," the Indian Foreign Ministry wrote in a statement.
Since the crisis flared up last year, India has denied involvement in attacks and killings targeting Sikh activists on Canadian soil.
Security services in Canada: Modi knew about acts of violence
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi knew about the murder of Sikh leader Hardepp Singh Nijjar in Canadian British Columbia and other acts of violence in the country in advance, reports The Globe and Mail. The newspaper has spoken to an intelligence source who states that the security services in the country assume that Modi was informed.
Attacks on Sikhs on Canadian soil have been linked to Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. The source states that the assessment from the Canadian side is that it is "inconceivable" that Modi was not involved in the discussions.
Diplomatic ties between the countries have deteriorated significantly in the past year amid allegations of Indian involvement in the violence.
